New membership requirement: Swedish limited company

Installatörsföretagen has decided that all member companies must operate through the same company form. From 1 April 2026, membership will therefore require a Swedish limited company (AB). This requirement applies to both Swedish and foreign companies. Existing members will have a transition period until 30 April 2027 to make this change.

On this page you will find answers to common questions about what the decision means and what it may mean for your company.

This change is about making sure all our member companies have the same conditions. Today our members have different company types, and that makes it harder to treat everyone in the same way.

You can read more about this change on our information page (Swedish).

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Installatörsföretagen making this change?

This decision is about treating all members the same way and creating fair conditions in the industry. If all members have the same company type, it becomes easier for us to represent them, support them and follow up when needed.

Are you banning foreign companies?

No, we are not banning foreign companies. But we want all members to have a Swedish limited company registered with Bolagsverket (the Swedish Companies Registration Office).

As an industry and employer organisation, it is important that we know which companies we represent. With foreign companies we sometimes have less ability to follow up when needed. That is why we want all members to also have a Swedish limited company.

Do we have to move our business to Sweden, or just add a Swedish limited company?

You do not have to move your whole business to Sweden. In many cases it is enough to set up a Swedish limited company that runs the business in Sweden.

Can we use a Swedish branch instead of a Swedish limited company?

No. For membership in the future, a Swedish limited company is required. A branch alone does not meet the membership requirement.

Can our foreign company own the Swedish limited company?

Yes. It is common that a foreign company owns a Swedish limited company. Many international companies have this type of structure.

How do I start a Swedish limited company (AB)?

You can follow step-by-step guides on verksamt.se, where you will find information about the process and how to register a company in Sweden.

Does this change stop companies from signing collective agreements and taking part in public contracts?

No. This change does not stop companies from signing collective agreements. The decision is about membership rules in Installatörsföretagen, not about collective agreements. If a company needs time to start a Swedish limited company, it can sign a direct agreement (“hängavtal”) with the relevant trade union in the meantime.

How do I convert a sole trader business (enskild firma) into a Swedish limited company (AB)?

You can find step-by-step guides on how to do this on verksamt.se

How can I get support if I need to make this change?

We will contact affected members and help explain what the change means and how the process can work.

During the transition period, our company advisers and member service team are available during our regular opening hours by both email and phone: contact us.

Do you have problems with foreign companies that behave badly?

No, the reason for this decision is that we want the same possibility to follow up all members, both Swedish and foreign. This means we can treat all members in the same way.

Who made this decision?

The decision was made by the board of Installatörsföretagen. The board is made up of representatives from our member companies. After looking into the issue carefully, they decided that requiring a Swedish limited company is the best way to ensure equal treatment between members.

But isn’t it discriminatory if not everyone can be a member anymore?

The purpose of this decision is actually to treat all members the same way.
That’s why we want all members to have a Swedish limited company. Today it is also quite easy and quick to start a limited company through the website: verksamt.se

How many companies are affected?

This concerns a small share of our members, only a few percent. Our hope is that most of them will make the change and continue as members.

Won’t this have financial consequences if you lose members?

This concerns only a small percentage of our members. Our expectation and hope is that most of the affected companies will make the change and stay as members.

Does this go against the EU principle of free movement?

We have looked into this question and spoken with legal experts. Our assessment is that a requirement about company type does not go against EU rules.

Other employer organisations do not have this requirement. Why are you different?

We can only speak for Installatörsföretagen. We have seen a need for this change so that we have access to the right information and can follow up our members in the same way. In the end, this is about treating all members equally.
